Flamenco's Next Generation was joined by Cante Veronica Medina, Guitarist Alejandro Pais and dancer Illeana Gomez this weekend for a performance at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. The group was met with a highly appreciative and energetic audience of 200 including children, adults and seniors.

The art pieces at this wonderful art museum gained new purpose, appropriately adorning the stage for Flamenco. The Institute for Spanish Arts is extremely thankful and honored to have received such a warm welcome from the Roswell community and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Foundation. A wonderful occasion as the day was shared with birthdays of Don Anderson, founder of the Museum and guest guitarist Alejandro.

Flamenco's Next Generation was invited once again to perform at the annual Spanish Colonial Arts gala. The group performed a thirty minute set for an audience of approximately four-hundred.

The youth flamenco group, initially started and trained by Maria Benitez herself in 2002, continues to dance throughout private and public events and venues in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The group has welcomed new members in the past few years to provide newer generations of youth with opportunities in Flamenco dance. New members are recruited in auditions from a pool of pre and teen-aged students in ongoing flamenco classes at the Institute for Spanish Arts.

Flamenco's Next Generation was accompanied at the Spanish Colonial Arts 2013 Gala by professional guitarist Alejandro Pais Iriart and Cante (singer) Meagan Chandler.

<![CDATA[Practice Makes Perfect: Flamenco's Next Generation]]>Mon, 31 Dec 2012 06:23:44 GMThttp://www.institutespanisharts.org/2/post/2012/12/practice-makes-perfect-flamencos-next-generation.html
Every summer Flamenco's Next Generation's young dancers come together to share in the experience of a summer performance season.
Most of the members have been part of the group for ten years, since 2002. Several have moved away to pursue their studies in college. But every year they all come together to share the stage. This is a shoot from the 2011 summer rehearsals. Being in the studio during rehearsals is an intense experience. It feels inappropriate even to be so still amidst so much passion and the whirlwind created in the air by their electric motion and their energetic soles stomping...

Young Emmy Grimm.
Emmy Grimm will receive the Melissa Engestrom Youth Artist Award for her accomplishments as a flamenco artist as well as her ongoing efforts teaching youth the history and technique of flamenco.

Grimm began studying flamenco at Maria Benitez’ Institute for Spanish Art at the age of four. By the age of ten, she was invited to join the Institute’s youth company, Flamenco’s Next Generation, eventually becoming a featured soloist with the company. Committed to passing on the history and tradition of flamenco, Grimm began teaching at the Institute’s Truchas Summer program at the age of only twelve—sometimes instructing young people several years older than she. She has continued to teach flamenco at elementary schools around northern New Mexico and serves as the main children’s instructor at the Institute for Spanish Arts.

Grimm has also established herself professionally, performing in the Theresa Cardenas Spanish Dance Theater’s 2010 production of El Pintor at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM; at The Lodge at Santa Fe with the Entre Flamenco Company, under the direction of internationally-renowned flamenco artists Antonio Granjero and Estefania Ramirez; and at venues throughout Santa Fe with well-known flamenco guitarist Jose “Chuscales” Valle and dancer Mina Fajardo. She continues to pursue her craft through intensive workshops and classes around the country.
